FORMER Amsterdam Admirals quarterback KURT WARNER put three earlier interceptions behind him to throw the pass that sent the St. Louis Rams to Super Bowl XXXIV against the Tennessee Titans in Atlanta next Sunday. Warner threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Proehl late in the fourth quarter to give the Rams an 11-6 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Championship game in St. Louis. Joining Warner in the NFL’s title game will be eight other NFL Europe League veterans on the Rams’ active roster. Warner, who led the NFL Europe League is passing yardage (2,101) and touchdown passes (15) in 1998, was named MVP of the 1999 NFL season after throwing for 41 touchdowns, 4,353 yards and leading the league with a 109.2 passer rating. But his first pass of the game was intercepted to set up a Buccaneers field goal. He responded by leading the Rams on a 16-play, 74-yard drive that ended with a 24-yard field goal by Jeff Wilkins. With the Rams trailing 6-5 in the third quarter, Warner — who ended the first half with 15 completions from 24 yards for 121 yards — guided his team into scoring position but saw his pass intercepted at the two-yard line by linebacker Hardy Nickerson. As defenses continued to dominate, Warner threw his third interception early in the fourth quarter, but with 4:44 remaining he hit Proehl with a spectacular 30-yard scoring pass on third and 4 to give the Rams an 11-6 lead. Warner’s attempted pass for a two-point conversion fell incomplete, but the Buccaneers came up short on their attempt to snatch victory on the final drive of the game. Warner, who finished with 26 completions from 43 pass attempts for 258 yards, said: “We had been trying to make big plays all day. The character of this team all year has been that when he have needed a big play someone has stepped forward and today it was Ricky Proehl. “We were up against a very good defensive team and we will be again next week. I just hope we don’t put ourselves in a hole again next week.” Rams linebacker MIKE JONES (Sacramento 1992) made 6 tackles, while guard TOM N_TTEN (Amsterdam 1998) started for the Admirals and also added two special teams tackles. In the AFC Championship game, defensive back GEORGE McCULLOUGH (Barcelona 1998) was inactive as the Tennessee Titans beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 33-14.
