Tokyo, 27 May 2013–Tokyo’s reputation as the world’s most forward-thinking city shined brightly on the weekend during Sumida River’s Tokyo Hotaru (Firefly) festival, which attracted close to 280,000people eager to view a “high-tech river”decorated with 100,000 solar-powered LED bulbs.

Tokyo 2020 CEO and Japanese Olympic Committee Vice President Masato Mizuno said: “This year’s Tokyo Firefly Festival was a truly spectacular experience that highlighted Japan’s renowned technology and the city’s innovative energy. The breath-taking event was perfectly aligned with Tokyo 2020’s use of innovation to unite people in a dynamic celebration.”2

About Tokyo 2020 Bid Committee
The Tokyo 2020 Bid Committee is the organisation driving Tokyo’s second consecutive bid for the right to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020. The city of Tokyo, Japan’s vibrant capital and Candidate City for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad, launched the united body on 15 Sept. 2011. Spearheaded by IOC Member and Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) President Tsunekazu Takeda as Tokyo 2020 President, its Executive Board is composed of Olympians, Paralympians, and members from various organisations including the national government, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the JOC and the Japan Paralympic Committee (JPC). JOC Vice President Masato Mizuno is in charge of the running of day-to-day affairs at the bid’s head office as Chief Executive Officer of Tokyo 2020. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will elect the 2020 host city at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 7 Sept. 2013.
