Conference Background



In the spring 2005, the Danish Minister of Sports, Mr. Brian Mikkelsen, took the initiative to launch a feasibility study on the potentials and obstacles of a Copenhagen bid for the Olympic Games. The report produced by Ramboell Management was presented at a press conference on March 6, 2006.

Aim of the Conference

The conference is organized from a research point of view to discuss the benefits of hosting major sport events. The aim of the conference is to narrow down the essential points in the discussion of the effects of hosting a major sport event and ultimately the Olympic Games. By consulting experts and academics, the conference will discuss the facts and the myths surrounding effect measurement of major sport events and ask the question: Which factors determine the success of hosting the Olympic Games?

The conference will cover the following topics:

Experiences from preparing, hosting and bidding for the Olympic Games including case examples from:

  1. • the London 2012 Organizing Committee

  2. • the Stockholm 2004 Bid Committee

  3. • the 1992 Barcelona Games

Economic and social effects of hosting a mega sports event including an overview of existing research:

  1. • cost cutting measures with regards to facility operations and infrastructures

  2. • social, integrative and other effects

  3. • city, company and country branding

  4. • environmental and ethical effects
