The 2014 PyeongChang Bid Committee Completed the IOC Evaluation Commission Visit
Following the IOC Evaluation Commission inspection of PyeongChang 2014’s plan including on-site visits to PyeongChang and Gangneung venues from 14-17 February, an official press conference was held on 17 February to conclude the visit.
The IOC Evaluation Commission arrived Seoul afternoon on Saturday, receiving warm farewell from thousands of citizens of Gangwon Province. The IOC delegates met with President Roh Moo-hyun at Chungwhadae, the presidential office, and then held a press conference to wrap up its visit to PyeongChang, the candidate city for the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
The key leaders for bidding such as Lee Kun-hee, Korean IOC member, Han Seung-soo, chairman of the bid committee, Kim Jin-sun, governor of Gangwon province and executive president, and Kim Jung-gil, the president of KOC attended the meeting with President Roh Moon-hyun and the IOC Evaluation Commission members. President Roh Moo-hyun said: “We will try to create a festival for the reconciliation between South and North Korea and for peace and prosperity in Northeast Asia through hosting the 2014 PyeongChang Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. We expect that the 2014 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games will be a meaningful festival, delivering a message of peace.”
Chiharu Igaya, the chairman of the IOC Evaluation Commission said: “We appreciate the active support of the Korean government and the continuous support from the president will be extremely helpful.” He also indicated: “As Korea has successfully hosted international sports events like the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games and the 2002 FIFA World Cup, security should not be a problem and the IOC hopes that sports will bring happiness for both South and North Korea.”
In the press conference, chairman Chiharu Igaya expressed: “I am very happy to have spent the last four days in PC. We have been very impressed on what PC has to offer. We would like to express our sincere gratitude for everything during our visit. We were pleased to meet the KOC, Athletes, and all the others as well.
Han Seung-soo, Chairman of the Bid Committee said: “The IOC Evaluation Commission praised the quality of our presentation so many times. We sincerely appreciate the commission’s visit to PyeongChang and I would like to ask all Korean citizens to continue to show unwavering passion and support for the bid.”
The residents in PyeongChang made a 5.4km “2014 sign banner” that shows their hope and desire to host the Winter Games and displayed it along both sides of the road as the Evaluation Commission passed by. President Chiharu Igaya attended the signature belt event at Hoenggye Square and responded to the overwhelming hospitality by writing “Good Luck.” The other members of the commission also wrote “Good Luck” for PC in their bid attempt.
The IOC Evaluation Commission will now visit Sochi, Russia from 20-23 February and Salzburg, Austria from 14-17 March and then summit their report to the IOC. The result of all three candidate cities’ inspection will be made public on 4 June 2007, one month ahead of the selection of the host city for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
