First Globally-Integrated Fibre-Satellite Network Provides Broadcasters with Economical One-Stop-Shopping Transmission Solutions
LAS VEGAS, Nevada, April 10, 2000 – Teleglobe (NYSE, TSE: TGO) and Television New Zealand (TVNZ) Satellite Services, two of the world’s leading providers of broadcast transmission services, today announced that they will deliver the first globally-integrated fibre and satellite video transmission network. Through an alliance that combines the respective video networks of each partner, the companies will offer cost-effective, one-stop-shop global transmission solutions to broadcast television networks, Internet content providers, film studios, sports rights holders and syndicators of programmes around the world.
Teleglobe owns and operates the world’s first MPEG2 4:2:2 fibre optic video network, while TVNZ operates an extensive MPEG2 4:2:2 satellite network. By combining the two networks, the companies are able to transport rich media content originating from International Television Access Centres (ITACS) in Los Angeles, New York City, Washington, D.C., Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, London, Paris, Johannesburg, New Delhi, Bangkok, Jakarta, Beijing, Hong Kong, Perth, Sydney and Auckland. Additional ITACs will be added this year.
‘The explosive growth of webcasting and streaming has put a tremendous demand on professional television transmission services,’ said Tom Fabian, vice president of business development for Teleglobe’s Content Distribution group. ‘Both Teleglobe and TVNZ Satellite Services are recognized as the leaders in this field, operating the world’s best networks and technology. Our new proposition provides the strongest economic value coupled with the best service reputations in the industry.’
‘We have the combined expertise to originate a video feed out of any region of the world, that can then go live-to-air to any number of distribution mediums, ‘ said Sam Fairhall, general manager of TVNZ Satellite Services. ‘Both Teleglobe and TVNZ Satellite Services are recognized around the world as top-line providers of carriage for time sensitive programming. Where reliable, live-to-air delivery is vital, our organizations are the first choice for those whose life blood is fast breaking news or live sports events.’
The Teleglobe/TVNZ network is built on the MPEG2 4:2:2 international standard for broadcast quality transmission of content for post-production and re-purposing of content to other distribution means, such as the Internet.
Two round-the-clock booking centres located in Auckland, New Zealand and in Montreal, Canada support the network. Staff at these centres can handle customer orders in over eight languages, including English, French, Dutch, Japanese, Cantonese, Mandarin and Spanish.
In addition, the TVNZ/Teleglobe network has over 300 receive-only sites throughout the world to facilitate final distribution to the end recipients, whether telecommunications hub, television network, direct to home satellite provider or webcaster.

About TVNZ Satellite Services
Owned and operated by a television-broadcast company, TVNZ Satellite Services is an occasional use satellite carriage provider. The network was originally established by TVNZ to offset the high cost of external carriage of live news and sports coverage destined for it’s own domestic market. TVNZ Satellite Services has since developed a wider focus and become a
major provider of carriage services to third parties. It has concentrated its network on primary routes, adding additional ITACs as demand increases and market conditions permit. Formidable growth, both of turnover and reputation throughout its 15 year history is testimony to its responsiveness, its reliability, its innovation and its first hand knowledge of the broadcast business.
The TVNZ end-to-end MPEG2 multi-channel, itinerant satellite delivery network reaches across the Indian and Pacific Ocean’s spanning territories from London to North America. Global transponders on NSS Indian Ocean Region (IOR) 703 at 57?E and INTELSAT Pacific Ocean Region (POR) 701 at 180?E, inter-connect at Perth where TVNZ owns and operates a fully digital earth station.
Deploying 5 channels on its IOR capacity and 7 channels on its POR capacity, TVNZ offers point to point, point to multi-point and multi-point to point anywhere-to-anywhere services. An international network of permanent uplink hubs (ref. ITAC list above) includes TVNZ’s own earth station located in central Auckland. This facility provides full connectivity with other satellite systems in both Western and Eastern hemispheres. The seamless, near global carriage achievable using this infrastructure is supported by the distribution of in excess of 160 TVNZ-specific Integrated Receiver Decoders (IRDs) that can be conditionally accessed across the Network. IRD location is continually reviewed according to customer needs.
TVNZ Satellite Services is part of the Television New Zealand Limited group of companies, wholly owned by the New Zealand Government. Domestically, the company holds 75% market share operating two free-to-air television channels. Television New Zealand Limited is governed by a Board and operates on a fully commercial basis. The small relative size of New Zealand as well as a deregulated broadcast environment has stimulated the company to diversify internationally and has afforded an enabling culture in which to do so.
