The Lawn Tennis Association announced today that former Wimbledon semifinalist Roger Taylor will replace David Lloyd as British Davis Cup Captain effective immediately. Taylor’s first assignment will be to captain the British team in the World Group Qualifying Round in July. “I am very proud to accept this opportunity to captain my country in the Davis Cup and look forward to working with the leading players and coaches to compete successfully in the world’s top team tennis event,” said Taylor. “I hope to emulate the achievements of one of my contemporaries and doubles partner, John Newcombe. He has proved himself a very successful captain with the Australian Davis Cup team since he took over.” Taylor, whose Davis Cup record includes a 29-11 win/loss record in 18 ties, will be selecting members of his Davis Cup back-up squad over the coming weeks, including a coach and a fitness trainer. “We are delighted to have Roger on board as our new Davis Cup captain and believe that his vast matchplay experience and his drive for success will prove a great asset to the squad in the matches ahead,” said John Crowther, Chief Executive of the LTA.
