The GSI Nations & Cities Indices feature 587 cities from 88 nations, with 683 events across 155 categories in 81 sports analysed, including both summer and winter Olympic sports, and Olympic ‘recognised’ sports.
USA crowned Global Sports Nation for third consecutive year
USA has once again topped Sportcal's GSI Nations Index in 2018, extending its lead ahead of second placed United Kingdom, and China, which climbs to third. Within the analysed period, USA has accumulated a total score of 39,681, having secured no fewer than 48 major sports events – more than any other nation.

As the index spans a 14-year period from 2012–2025, the LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games are yet to register and will ensure USA remains a contender for years to come.
Tokyo topples London to become Global Sports City 2018
Tokyo, Japan, has become only the second city to claim the title of Global Sports City, having beaten London, UK to the top of Sportcal’s GSI Cities Index 2018. Nanjing, Minsk and St. Petersburg are the big movers in the top 20, while Baku, Glasgow and Innsbruck each fall down the index.

Tokyo leads the index ahead of fellow Olympic host cities London (United Kingdom), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Paris (France). However, it is Paris that has hosted or is scheduled to host more events (14) than any other city from 2012-2025.
IAAF World Championships London 2017 named Global Sports Event 2017
The IAAF World Championships London 2017 has been named Sportcal’s Global Sports Event of the Year after topping the GSI Events Index ahead of FISU’s Summer Universiade 2017 (Taipei City) and the 2017 FINA World Championships (Budapest).
GSI Events Index – Top 5
In the closest contest in the history of the GSI Events Index, the IAAF World Championships London 2017 claimed the title after scoring a GSI Event Rating of 2,828, marginally ahead of FISU’s Summer Universiade (2,788) and the 2017 FINA World Championships (2,657). The GSI Event Ratings are calculated annually and are used to produce the GSI Nations and Cities Index.
ABOUT THE GLOBAL SPORTS IMPACT (GSI) INDICES:
The GSI Nations and Cities Index is based on in-depth analysis of major multisport games and world championships over a rolling 14-year period, covering seven years in the past (including the current year) and seven years in the future.
The GSI Events Index is based on in-depth analysis of major multisport games and world championships to have taken place in any given year.
The GSI Nations Index, GSI Cities Index and GSI Events Index will be included in the GSI Report 2018 (Event Hosting & Bidding) – the 1st volume of the GSI Report 2018, which is to be published soon.
