At the same time that the Madrid 2012 Basketball International Tournament was taking place in Madrid, the players of the Spanish national team and the Olympic Candidature wanted to pledge themselves to the principles boosted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for environment and sustainable development, as shown in the last sport events that have taken place in the capital of Spain.

Moreover, the Spanish basketball national team players gave their image to foster the selective refuse collection during this tournament through the yellow containers that have been placed in the Palacio de Vistalegre by ECOEMBES in order to separate and handle them later. Jorge Garbajosa, Jose Manuel Calderón and Rudy Fernández agreed on urging the citizens of Madrid to separate their refuse, ‘because they are the beginning of the recycling chain.’

Madrid 2012 is resolved to foster modern Olympic Games, that comprise the protection of the environment and sustainability. The measures, which have been already introduced in previous events in the capital, are to be established in future competitions. This commitment is reflected in the ‘Madrid 2012 Green Charter,’ in which ‘the firm wish of making of the Olympic Candidature an example of commitment and responsibility given the complex and difficult environmental challenges of our time’ are announced.
