Soccer Australia Confirms Canberra Cosmos League Ban

The Board of Soccer Australia today resolved to terminate the right of Canberra Cosmos to participate in the 2001/2002 National Soccer League competition.

Soccer Australia had previously conditionally granted Canberra Cosmos the right to participate in season 2001/2002 based on the provision of irrevocable Deeds of Guarantee and Indemnity.

Canberra Cosmos, without the prior knowledge of Soccer Australia, released the guarantors from their obligations under the Deeds only 2 weeks after receiving confirmation from Soccer Australia on 4 July 2001 that the club had been admitted to the NSL.

Soccer Australia considers this revocation of the Deeds of Guarantee and Indemnity constitutes a repudiation of the agreement to allow Canberra Cosmos to participate in the 2001/2002 season and made its decision accordingly.

NSL Management has drawn up contingency plans, which include the option of a third round of the competition being played.

An announcement on this will be made following discussions between the Board of Soccer Australia and NSL Commission.
