Samsung Sponsors the Inaugural Singapore Ladies Masters
Parallel Media Group plc (‘PMG’) is delighted to welcome the internationally renowned consumer electronics brand Samsung as the title sponsor of the recently announced inaugural Singapore Ladies Masters. The tournament, entitled, ‘Samsung Ladies Masters 2005’, is set to host England’s Laura Davies and the Korean sensation, Soo Yun Kang, and will be played at the prestigious Laguna National Golf and Country Club from February 3rd to February 5th.
In a welcome move that sees the company expand its existing investment in the professional game, Samsung joins a host of other highly respected global Asian brands in support of the tournament. Samsung has a high pedigree in supporting ladies professional golf. Since 1995, Samsung has been the official Title Sponsor of the Samsung World Championship.
Regional CEO and President of Samsung Asia, Mr. Sang-Jin Park, stated,
‘Samsung is proud to bring the first-ever Ladies Masters to Singapore. The 2005 Samsung Ladies Masters is a premier professional sporting event, and one that we expect will be warmly welcomed by golf enthusiasts in Singapore and in this region. Samsung is committed to bringing the best of experiences to our consumers, whether through leading events like the Samsung Ladies Masters or through our innovative products and technology.’
Currently ranked number one on the Ladies European Tour Order of Merit, Britain’s most successful golfer, Laura Davies brings a wealth of talent to the Samsung Ladies Masters. Laura was a member of the victorious 2003 European Solheim Cup Team in Sweden, where she posted a 1-2-1 record; with 17-1/2 points. She is tied with Annika Sorenstam as the event’s all-time points earner and is the only player to compete in all eight stagings of The Solheim Cup. In September 2003, she became the first woman to compete in an Asian PGA Tour event at the Kolon Cup Korean Open in Seoul, South Korea and had no less than 10 top 5 finishes on the LPGA Tour.
The attractive and stylish Soo Yun Kang has played golf since the age of 12, winning the 1996 World Championship as an amateur. She turned pro, playing very successfully in Korea on the KLPGA, and has regularly featured at the top of the KLPGA money list, consistently in the top three, as she was in 2002. Soo Yun has impressed many by beating formidable competitors in Korean events, including Annika Sorenstam, Karrie Webb, Se Ri Pak and Laura Davies. Soo Yun easily set career bests in several categories during 2003, and finished 33rd on the money list.
The Samsung Ladies Masters, to be held under the auspices of the Robe di Kappa Ladies European Tour (‘LET’), The Korean Ladies Professional Golfers Association (‘KLPGA’), The Ladies Asian Golf Tour (‘LAGT’) and the Singapore Ladies Golf Association, is to offer prize money of US$200,000, with points counting towards the Solheim Cup and official LET and KLPGA Orders of Merit. The tournament will be jointly promoted by PMG and JoongAng Broadcasting Corporation. In a pioneering move, the Ladies tournament will be played on the same course as the PGA European Tour men’s event, the Caltex Masters presented by Carlsberg to be staged a week earlier.
David Ciclitira, Group President & CEO of PMG was enthusiastic about the news, ‘I am absolutely delighted that Samsung has chosen this event to continue their tradition of supporting Ladies golf. As is evident, the Samsung Ladies Masters is set to attract many of the rising stars in the game, along with seasoned players from Europe. I would like to thank Samsung for their vision and continued involvement with both the men’s and ladies game.’
Mr. Yook Chon, President of JoongAng Broadcasting Corporation added, ‘We welcome the involvement and support of Samsung in the Samsung Ladies Masters. It is particularly pleasing to see a company of Samsung’s pedigree firmly behind this initiative as well as the participation of world class stars. We hope that this will be the start of an exciting relationship between ourselves, our joint-promoter PMG, the LET, LAGT and KLPGA.’
Karen Lunn, Chairman of the LET was quoted, ‘I welcome the news that Samsung is continuing their support of women’s golf and this provides further evidence that our sport is attracting major blue-chip organisations that are using the LET as a vehicle in which to promote their products.
‘Samsung has a long and distinguished history of supporting women’s golf and I hope that this will continue. I would like to thank both J-Golf and PMG for promoting this event on behalf of the Robe di Kappa Ladies European Tour and this is testament to the further development of women’s golf in both Europe and Asia.’
