On the busiest weekend of the year, Salzburg’s W.A. Mozart Airport (SZG) recently handled more than 138 planes carrying roughly 29,000 passengers during one day without any delays or problems. Up to 30.000 passengers can be handled between 6am and 10pm on any given day within the current capacities. These 2007 numbers are very similar to the projected number of travellers for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. As the second largest EU winter charter airport, Salzburg W.A. Mozart is especially well organised in the handling of sport tourists with its own ski-check-in as well as the logistics of departure and landing. Also, the connection with many great European hubs, e.g. London, Frankfurt, Vienna, Paris, Brussels, Dublin, Berlin, has become very well developed over recent years.

Richard Schano, Chief Press Officer of the Salzburg Airport, recently stated, “Being the second biggest European winter charter airport we are experienced to dispatch up to 150 planes and 30,000 passengers on a single day. We are able to do so because we have invested into the infrastructure of the airport in the last 10 years, especially in the new construction of Terminal 2. In addition, we have a very competent team thus logistics of this size are functioning well. Also, we will not rest, but work on further improvements in the coming years. Should Salzburg have the honour to host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2014, then I can assure that the handling of passengers in both terminals will be smooth, fast and customer friendly. At this point in time we are already prepared for an event of the magnitude, complexity and significance such as the Winter Olympics Games.”
