Russia’s Team Flies the Flag for Moscow’s 2012 Olympic Bid

Moscow’s Deputy Mayor and Chairman of the Moscow 2012 Bid Committee, Valeri Shantsev, expressed his confidence that the Russian Olympic team would perform very strongly in Athens and that this would boost Moscow’s bid to host the Olympic Games in 2012.

At the official send-off of the Olympic team on August 5 in Moscow’s Hall of Fame in Poklonnaya Gora, Valeri Shantsev said, ‘We have made a great deal of progress in developing our plans for 2012 and we will have the opportunity to present them to the world’s media in Athens next week. The sporting heritage of our country is a key strength of our bid. Much will also depend on your performance in Athens.’

The entire Russian Olympic team going to Athens wants Moscow to be selected as the Host City for the 2012 Games – and to that end, each of them has agreed to become an Ambassador working to support their capital’s bid.

Following their return from Athens, the team will work alongside 100 other Olympic champions who have already agreed to be official Ambassadors for Moscow 2012.

Later this year and in 2005 all the athletes will work to convince the International Olympic Family that the city would be a historic, spectacular and sustainable choice to stage the world’s most important sporting event in 2012.
