The 2002 Northern Ford Grand Final will be staged at Halton Stadium, the home of Widnes Vikings who won promotion after taking the Premiership’s major trophy at the end of the 2000 – 2001 campaign.

This year’s final will be played on Saturday, 12 October 2002 (Kick off 18.15hrs) in front of SkySports cameras and will provide the stage for the culmination of the Premiership’s first top nine play-off.

Richard Lewis, the RFL’s Executive Chairman, said: ‘It was important that one of the most prestigious games in the Rugby League calendar was staged in a suitable stadium and there is no doubt that the Halton Stadium fulfils that criteria.

‘Besides its modern facilities for both athletes and spectators, the Halton Stadium has the advantage of being a recognised Rugby League venue that is easily accessible both from the motorway system and public transport. We
are grateful to Halton Borough Council for agreeing to host this important fixture.’

He added: ‘The Northern Ford Premiership Grand Final has developed into a great day out for all Rugby League fans and by playing at the Halton Stadium we are able to guarantee a neutral venue for this important fixture’.

Councillor Phil Harris, Halton Borough Council’s Executive Board member with responsibility for the stadium, said: ‘The reputation and facilities of the Halton Stadium speak for themselves. We are delighted to host this prestigious event and we look forward to providing a great welcome to everyone on the day.’

Previous Premiership Grand Finals have been staged at the McAlpine Stadium, Huddersfield; Headingley Stadium, Leeds, Gigg Lane, Bury and Spotland Stadium Rochdale.
