In both substance and style, PyeongChang earned high marks in its presentation at the 66th International Sports Press Association (AIPS) meeting last week in Porto, Portugal, PyeongChang bid committee officials said.

Delegates from more than 140 countries expressed keen interest in PyeongChang’s media facilities and programs after viewing its presentations, officials said.

In particular, the free air shuttle plan between Incheon International Airport and Yangyang International Airport during the 2010 Winter Olympics garnered attention.

The delegates, who were journalists, gave PyeongChang leading marks for the proximity between its media villages and sports venues, and the absence of a minimum length of time for lodging.

PyeongChang sent a five-member delegation, including bid Chairman Gong Ro-myung and Gangwon Gov. Kim Jin-sun, to Portugal last week. The AIPS meeting served as the final opportunity for PyeongChang and fellow competitors Vancouver, Canada, and Salzburg, Austria, to promote themselves ahead of the International Olympic Committee’s selection of a winner on July 2 in Prague, the Czech Republic.

At the Porto presentation, Gong emphasized the Korean people’s unbending desire to host the 2010 Winter Olympics and the central government’s unequivocal financial support. The bid chairman also outlined the leading reasons why PyeongChang should host the Olympics.

Gov. Kim said at the presentation that winter Olympics in PyeongChang would be ‘a prelude for peace on the Korean Peninsula.’ He went on to say that the IOC and Olympic family can help advance peace in the long-divided peninsula through its selection of PyeongChang.

With compelling presentations, PyeongChang bid committee officials said PyeongChang impressed all the delegates attending both the IOC Executive Board meeting in Madrid in mid-May and the South American Sports Organization’s general assembly in April in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Just 30 days before the IOC selects the winning bid city, PyeongChang bid committee officials stressed their determination to promote PyeongChang’s advantages to the final hour.
