Sport cities have many characteristics in common: they have a strong offering of sport programmes for their population, they host numerous national and international sporting events on a yearly basis, and they are often also the home of successful sports teams.

While cities may not be able to directly influence the on-field performance of their professional sports teams, they can undoubtedly partner with such teams to exploit mutually-beneficial opportunities, such as increasing civic pride, generating economic benefits, and branding the city in an attractive and engaging manner. But how can cities work with professional sports clubs to maximise these collective opportunities?

For its 2017 edition, the Smart Cities & Sport Summit will feature a special panel discussion with representatives from prestigious sports teams competing in the biggest North American leagues: NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL. Those guests will discuss the various benefits a city can get from the presence of a local sports team, and how they collaborate with various public institutions to maximise those benefits.

We are very excited to announce our first speaker on this panel: Aaron Popkey, Director of Public Affairs for the Green Bay Packers.

Despite being located in a relatively small American town in Wisconsin, the Packers are recognised as one of the most prestigious American Football team in the world, having won 13 World Championship titles. It will be very interesting to listen to Mr. Popkey’s presentation and discover how the Packers organisation work to make the City of Green Bay shine worldwide!

Other participants from prestigious North American sport teams will be announced shortly! Stay tuned!
