Plans Announced for National Tennis Centre

The LTA is delighted to unveil its plans for the National Tennis Centre (NTC) at Roehampton as construction gets underway. The NTC will provide a single site of national focus for tennis in Great Britain. These state-of-the-art facilities will give Britain’s young players the very best opportunity to realise their potential and compete on the world stage.

The NTC, which is being funded by the LTA with support from The All England Lawn Tennis Ground plc, and with land leased from the Bank of England, the owners of the site, will consist of world-class facilities including 16 outdoor courts, covering all the Grand Slam surfaces, 6 indoor courts, a gymnasium and state of the art sports science and medicine facilities. It will also house the administration of the LTA, ensuring a complete centre of excellence for British Tennis. It is expected that construction will begin mid-summer 2004, with final completion in 2006.

John Crowther, Chief Executive of the LTA said: ‘The National Tennis Centre is the flagship of our performance plan. It will bring together the very best coaches and support, Britain’s top players and our most promising youngsters. We are delighted to have the backing of the Minister for Sport, Richard Caborn, and look forward to starting work on creating this world class facility.’

David Felgate, LTA Performance Director said: ‘The National Tennis Centre will make a huge difference. The LTA cannot make top 100 players, but we can ensure they have the very best opportunity and support to realise their talent; the National Tennis Centre will contribute to this.’

Richard Caborn MP, Minister for Sport said: ‘I fully support the LTA’s plans for this new world class tennis centre. The centre will obviously help drive the performance of our top players. But it will also have a huge impact on grassroots tennis, offering young British talents the chance to make that crucial step up, with access to the best possible coaching and state of the art facilities. This is a further building block in the development structure for tennis.’

Charles Trippe, President of the LTA, said: ‘This is a significant milestone for the LTA and for British tennis. National tennis centres have played a pivotal role in other leading tennis nations and we believe this centre for excellence will have a major impact here in Britain.’
