Peking University Gymnasium Breaks Ground

The Peking University Gymnasium, the table tennis venue for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, broke ground on September 17.

Located in the southeastern part of the Peking University, the gymnasium covers 26,900 square metres. It will seat 8,000 spectators; with 6,000 permanent seats and 2000 temporary ones.

Taking post-Games use into full consideration, some more courts and sports facilities will also be built. It will be able to hold national and international big sports events and other activities. It will also meet the needs of physical education, training and recreation for the university students as well as serving the community.

The gymnasium is scheduled to complete in August 2007.

The venue is designed by the Architectural Design & Research Institute of Tongji University which won the bid in the design solicitation campaign.

Altogether 37 venues are needed for the 2008 Games with 31 located in Beijing. It is the 10th Olympic venue that starts construction among 11 newly-built ones in Beijing.
