Premier Rugby today confirmed that Jon Varney has been appointed as Commercial Director with responsibility for developing all commercial areas of the professional game
Varney’s appointment has been made by Premier Rugby with the full support and backing of the RFU. He has been tasked with the development of Zurich Premiership rugby as well as the England rugby portfolio of rights. His responsibilities will be to drive revenue from existing commercial rights and work closely with the clubs and the RFU in developing new initiatives.

Varney joins Premier Rugby from sports marketing agency, Octagon, where he was Vice President Commercial Affairs, with specific responsibility for the ERC Ltd and the Heineken Cup, Challenge Cup and Shield competitions. In addition, he has more than 12 years experience in sponsorship sales and consultancy working with a number of commercial sponsors and governing bodies, including the RFU and British and Irish Lions.
