NUSSLI pop-up arenas for unforgettable beach volleyball events
Beach volleyball has long evolved beyond being just a fashionable sport with a relaxed party atmosphere. This game on hot sands has developed into a professional sport and has become an attractive magnet for many sports fans. This is also thanks to the extraordinary locations at which the tournaments take place.
Because beach volleyball events do not just take place in sports stadiums but rather at sites with a great ambiance or lively locations right in the middle of the city, this naturally increases their attractiveness for spectators. However, events held in pop-up arenas require special solutions that are above all flexible; arenas, whose size and shape are tailored perfectly to the on-site situation, can be quickly set up and dismantled, yet still fulfill all requirements with regards to safety and comfort.
Built on Sand Yet Safe as a Rock
Naturally, a quality beach atmosphere is an integral component of beach volleyball events. Building an entire temporary stadium directly on Sydney's famous and bustling Bondi Beach seemed like a bold idea. Bold – but not impossible. With this attitude, the NUSSLI assembly team accepted the challenge for the 2000 Summer Olympics, which involved building a beach volleyball stadium that was to later offer 10,000 spectators the perfect sports event experience. The crew first anchored the foundation using 205 steel posts and 300 metric tons of steel beams, upon which they then built an entire stadium in just under three months. Excitement and action on the playing field and the sea surf in the background — there's likely no other stadium in the world that can offer its spectators such an experience.
World Championships with a High Factor of Fun in the Heart of the City
While Sydney attracts with its direct proximity to the Pacific Ocean, Berlin entices with its pulsing atmosphere in the city center. In 2005, Berlin hosted the Beach Volleyball World Championships and selected a stunning location right in the middle of the city for the stadium. Within two weeks, a beach volleyball stadium of impressive size, including a covered VIP grandstand, complete infrastructure for the media, and 9,000 spectator seats was built directly in front of the Palace of the Republic.
Temporary Stadiums — From XS to XL
Custom-built venues are not only suitable for events on the scale of a world championship. The organizers of smaller tournament series such as the FIVB Swatch Major Series also value the flexibility and convenience of custom-built stadiums. In June 2015, the coastal town Poreč in Croatia, Stavanger in Norway, and the holiday resort town of Gstaad in the Swiss Alps held their beach volleyball tournaments in NUSSLI stadiums, which were tailored exactly to each event's individual requirements with regard to size and facilities.
This is also true for the Austrian town of Klagenfurt, which in the summer of 2015 commissioned the construction of an arena from NUSSLI at the lido on the shores of Lake Wörthersee with all the trimmings for the 15th time: A grandstand facility that could seat 5,000 spectators, a covered VIP grandstand, seats for the media, sponsor platforms, video structures, as well as the popular VIP terrace, a portion of which projected into Lake Wörthersee.
Beach volleyball lives on the emotions and relaxed atmosphere surrounding the center court. This atmosphere develops in a compact arena, allowing the tension from the court to spill over directly to the spectators. Therefore, the success of the entire beach volleyball event not only depends on the performance of the athletes and the weather but undoubtedly also on the event infrastructure. NUSSLI's grandstand systems are freely configurable, allowing the size of the arena to be customized exactly to each individual event. They can be constructed quickly and fulfill the highest safety standards while providing the highest degree of flexibility and versatility — no matter whether it's on the beach, in the city, or high up in the mountains.
