Hyginus Anugo, 22, was fatally hit by a car as he ran across the street to catch a bus just a kilometer from the Nigerian team’s headquarters at the Southern Cross Bible College at Sefton. The 19yr old man that was at the wheel of the Holden Torana that struck down Anugo was treated for shock and minor cuts from a shattered windshield.

The runner’s wife, who is also a 400m runner for the Nigerian team, was scheduled to arrive on Saturday.

The news has left the Nigerian team devastated at the loss of their team mate on the eve of the Olympics. The team was temporarily lodged at Sefton prior to moving into the Olympic Village at homebush.

Anugo was set to run the 400m and was also on reserve for the 4×400 relay race.
