NFL FANS across Europe can watch the Wild Card playoff picture unfold live this weekend as television viewers are treated to two postseason games on Saturday night – followed by another pair of exciting contests on Sunday evening.
Sky Sports Extra in the United Kingdom, Premiere World in Germany and Sportmania in Spain all kickoff live at 9:30 p.m. UK / 10:30 p.m. CET when a rematch of a Wild Card game of last year sees the NFC sixth-seeded Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7) travel to Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia to face the NFC Eastern Division-champion Eagles (11-5).
In last year’s 19-5 Wild Card triumph over the Bucs, Philly’s defense allowed only 11 first downs while Eagles quarterback DONOVAN McNABB threw for two touchdowns and ran for another. ‘We have something to prove to ourselves,’ says Bucs Pro Bowl cornerback RONDE BARBER. ‘We went up there and got embarrassed last year. That’s the bottom line. We didn’t get it done.’
The Buccaneers, who lost to the Eagles in last weekend’s final regular season contest for both clubs, are led by former London Monarchs quarterback BRAD JOHNSON.
Late night viewers can then see the AFC Western Division-champion Oakland Raiders (10-6) take on the New York Jets (10-6) at 1:00 a.m. UK / 2:00 a.m. CET in the early hours of Sunday morning. The road doesn’t seem to bother the Jets, who had an AFC-best 7-1 road record this year. ‘A lot of people didn’t expect us to win in Oakland,’ says Jets head coach HERMAN EDWARDS.
‘It’s kind of surprising, given the way we played earlier this year, that a team this talented has lost three games,’ says Oakland Pro Bowl cornerback CHARLES WOODSON. ‘But it’s all about how you bounce back. We’ve done the losing streak thing now. It’s time to get back on track.’ Sky Sports 3 in the UK airs delayed coverage of both Saturday games at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.
Green Bay (12-4) has never lost a home playoff game (12-0) and is 10-0 in the playoffs at the site of Sunday’s game, Lambeau Field. That’s the daunting statistic facing the San Francisco 49ers (12-4) when they clash live on Premiere World at 6:30 p.m. CET on Sunday. Sky Sports Extra will join the action an hour into the proceedings at 6:30 p.m. and repeats Sunday’s Wild Card action at 12:00 p.m. on Monday on Sky Sports 3 in the UK. Canal Plus in Spain airs delayed coverage of the NFC showdown at 1:45 a.m. on Thursday.
On top of all that, Green Bay’s Pro Bowl quarterback BRETT FAVRE – who was tutored from 1992-95 by San Francisco head coach STEVE MARIUCCI when he was the Packers’ quarterbacks coach – has a 30-0 record at home when temperatures are 34 or below, which it may well be on Sunday.
‘Home-field is big,’ says Packers center MIKE FLANAGAN. ‘We would have had to get on a plane and go (to San Francisco). Now they have to come to our place, to cold weather and our fans. This is what we wanted.’
Viewers to TV2 in Denmark (10:30 p.m. CET) and Channel 5 in the UK (12:50 a.m., Monday) join those on Premiere World (10:30 p.m. CET) and Sky Sports Extra (9:30 p.m.) on Sunday evening to see the Baltimore Ravens (10-6) defend its Super Bowl title on the road in Miami against the Dolphins (11-5).
‘Offense wins games, defense wins championships,’ says Ravens Pro Bowl linebacker RAY LEWIS. ‘Just ride us. We’ll get you there.’ The Dolphins are led by former Amsterdam Admirals quarterback JAY FIEDLER, whose Dolphins are the only team to make the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season.
