The prestigious UEFA “Best Player in Europe” trophy has been redesigned by London based creative agency Designwerk, following a creative pitch to the top sports federation.

Seen here in the hands of 2012 winner Andrés Iniesta of FC Barcelona, the new trophy started life as a concept from Designwerk’s creative director Cristian Cook, who took inspiration from the shape of a dynamic human torso.

The initial stages of the creative process consisted of studying anatomical poses of the upper body, and how fabric interacts with it. Once the basic shape was approved by the client, Designwerk used computer scanning and wire frame graphics to realise the final 3D shape of the trophy, which was then cast in metal with a highly reflective silver finish.

The torso was intended to convey pride and achievement, with the upward angle of the arms and chest helping to express these attributes. A major challenge was to ensure the trophy was handled by the base and not by its main silver body, so a lot of thinking went into the ergonomics of how the award feels in a person’s hands.

The entire creative and production process took around 3 months, culminating in a Trophy which UEFA were extremely pleased with.
