MTN to Sponsor Top African Competitions

Cairo, Egypt: – MTN is proud to announce its official title sponsorship of Africa’s premier football tournament – the African Cup of Nations. The sponsorship extends to both the MTN African Cup of Nations 2006 and 2008, to be hosted in Egypt and Ghana, respectively.

MTN is especially proud of becoming the sponsor of a tournament that is as old as CAF itself, with the first African Cup of Nations taking place at CAF’s founding Assembly in Khartoum in 1957.

MTN’s partnership with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) also includes the title sponsorship of another African tournament – the CAF Champions League. The MTN CAF Champions League is the most prestigious club competition on the continent, and sees teams from the national leagues of Africa battling it out for the honour of becoming the best club team in Africa. Along with the glory of being known as Africa’s best club team, the tournament carries prize money of US$ 1 Million for the winners and US$750 000 for the finalists, making the MTN CAF Champions League the richest club competition in Africa.

‘As a truly African organisation, MTN is committed to investing in our continent and our people. MTN’s sponsorship of both the MTN African Cup of Nations and the MTN CAF Champions League reflects our passion for the growth and development of this important sport. Through all of MTN’s football partnerships, and indeed all its investments, MTN fully supports the communities in which it operates,’ says Phuthuma Nhleko, MTN Group CEO.

This essentially means that MTN sees this sponsorship as a catalyst for football excellence in Africa. Additionally, MTN realises the tremendous potential that exists at all levels across the game on our continent.

Issa Hayatou, CAF President said, ‘CAF are delighted to welcome MTN as the key sponsor of African football, particularly as they are committed to a long term vision for the game. We believe that this can only be good for football in Africa.’

MTN has already established strong links with the greatest achievers in African football through the MTN CAF Awards, the annual gala ceremony where the African Player of the Year, among other key awards, is announced. MTN is also proud to announce that the 2005 MTN CAF Awards will be hosted in South Africa on 15th February 2005. Becoming the new title sponsor of the MTN African Cup of Nations and the first ever title sponsor of the MTN CAF Champions League, MTN now has consolidated all of its football properties in Africa.
