The UCI BMX Supercross World Cup is staged in Copenhagen 7-8 May for the third year in succession. Once again the absolutely best world-class riders are competing at Europe’s best BMX track to fight for the overall World Cup victory and vital Olympic points in the time leading up to London 2012. The World Cup is furthermore a trial run for the World BMX Championships 2010 in Denmark.
Scandinavia’s largest BMX event begins in a few weeks. Once again the spectators are in for absolute world-class ultra sport in Copenhagen. On Friday 7 May the qualification-/time trial takes place and on Saturday 8 May all the finals are run. The Olympic discipline BMX Supercross begins with an 8 metres high ramp and the 8 participants shoulder by shoulder. A 350 metres long track with large leaps and tarmacked curves are covered in just 35 seconds. The speed reaches 60 km/h down the ramp and the riders are in the air up to 12 metres at a time.
And much is a stake. More than 130 riders from the BMX elite are fighting for crucial points for the world ranking list and the Olympic Games qualification as well. No doubt the audience is in for action and drama already in the first heat in an extreme sport with brute force, wildness and technique as important ingredients.
The male favourites are among others Maris Strombergs (Olympic Champion from Letvia), Sam Willoughby (no. 1 on the world ranking list and from Australia) and Donny Robinson (from USA and the winner of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Copenhagen 2008). The winner of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup 2009, Ivo van der Putten from Holland is a strong outsider for the victory this year. The female favourite is Shanaze Reade from Great Britain, who will do her utmost to win the title for the third time in succession in Copenhagen, but le Corguille (no. 1 on the world ranking list and from France) and Buchanan (from Australia) are strong competitors.
Europe’s best BMX track is located in Copenhagen
These days, the BMX track in Copenhagen is being upgraded with a number of new, permanent facilities, for example two start ramps of five and eight metres, respectively. According to the International Cycling Federation, UCI, this upgrading makes the track the best in Europe for the moment.
“There’s no doubt that the Copenhagen BMX venue is the best BMX venue in Europe. With the investment of having two permanent start ramps, not only is it the most versatile BMX track (suited both for elite and youngsters) ever built, but it also show cases the future of BMX. This is what many tracks will look like 10 years from now! The UCI are excited to once again bring the BMX Supercross World Cup to the Copenhagen BMX venue, and of course the absolute highlight will be when the BMX World Championships return in 2011” says Johan Lindström, BMX Sports Coordinator, UCI.
