Matiura promoted to Moldova senior job Moldova under-21 coach Alexandr Matiura has been promoted to guide the national team through the 2002 World Cup qualifiers. He replaces Ivan Daniliants as national team coach. At a news conference Pavel Chobanu, president of the Moldova football federation said he had 14 different applicants, including coaches from Wales, Romania and Israel but decided that Matiura would be the best person for the job. Matiura, 45, succeeds Ivan Daniliants, who quit as Moldova coach in October after a disappointing season. Moldova finished their EURO 2000 qualifying campaign in last place in Group Three without a win from eight matches. In the 2002 qualifiers, Moldova are in European group four with Sweden, Turkey, Slovakia, Macedonia and Azerbaijan.
