Martin Is Denmark’s Sporting Best
As if winning the Copenhagen Masters on home soil was not a good enough end to 1999, Camilla Martin’s year drew to a close with her hailed as Denmark’s Sports Personality of the Year. The award, run by the Danish newspaper BT, is the oldest and most prestigious of the sport prizes in Denmark – the winner is voted for among the top 36 athletes in Denmark, each being able to cast 3 votes. Camilla came out on top thanks to her surprise World Championship title, won in Copenhagen back in May. In second place was 800m runner and World Champion, Wilson Kipketer, followed in third place by Peter Schmeichel, former Manchester United goalkeeper, who helped the club to their most successful season ever in 1998/99. Our congratulations go to Camilla – in a sports-mad country such as Denmark, it’s a great honour for our badminton to have such an accolade.
