Madrid, 18 August 2009: The Madrid 2016 bid-team has today led praise and congratulations to Marta Dominguez who has won a Gold medal for the 3,000m steeple chase at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Berlin.

Dominguez set a new Spanish record of 9:07.32 seconds as she completed the tough hurdle race. Speaking on her victory, she said: “I have completed my childhood dream, to be champion of the world.” Domínguez’ victory seals Spain’s sporting success which continues to flourish, and her great sporting achievement means she is the first Spanish Athlete in ten years to lift a gold medal in athletics.

Fellow gold-medallist and Madrid 2016 bid leader Mercedes Coghen said: “The Madrid 2016 team and all of Spain is absolutely delighted for Marta and send our congratulations. Her victory is a huge personal achievement, and also a great achievement for Spanish sport, which continues to go from strength to strength.

“We are dedicated to delivering an Olympic Games which will be the best ever for competing athletes and which will enable us to harness the development of sport in Spain and beyond for generations to come.”

The Madrid 2016 delegation, including CEO Mercedes Coghen, Mayor of Madrid Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, Spain’s IOC member Juan Antonio Samaranch Jnr, Director of Sport Raúl Chapado and Managing Director Antonio Fernández Arimany, is currently in Berlin to learn as much as possible from the athletes’ own experiences at the 12th IAAF World Championships in Berlin.
