Lebanon were this week confirmed as hosts of the 2000 Asian Cup, after the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) had indicated earlier that the country might have to relinquish the job. This was the result of a lack of progress on several fronts, including the construction of stadia, as had been stipulated when Lebanon won the bid in 1996.
The AFC General Secretary, Dato’ Peter Velappan, told a press conference that an inspection committee met with government officials earlier this month and were, ‘assured of the government’s total commitment [to] ensuring the success of Lebanon 2000.’
Velappan continued, ‘We also visited the construction sites of stadia in Tripoli, Saida, and also visited the Beirut Municipal Stadium and left satisfied with the overall progress of work. Other facilities such as hotels and broadcasting facilities will also be improved. Based on this, we are confident Lebanon should be able to host the Asian Cup 2000.’
