Jonathan Edwards Appointed To The New London 2012 Board

Jonathan Edwards, Olympic Triple Jump gold medallist and London 2012 ambassador, has been has been appointed as the athlete member to serve on the newly established board of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG).  This is the new organisation that will deliver the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

“I am delighted that Jonathan will be the athlete member of the LOCOG board” said Sebastian Coe, chairman of LOCOG.  “Jonathan was an integral part of London’s successful bid to host the 2012 Games, he worked tirelessly on our behalf, and eloquently represented the views of our Athletes’ Advisory Commission.  Sport and the needs of athletes are central to London’s plans for the Games, and I know that Jonathan will continue to represent these views energetically.”

Jonathan said: “I am honoured to have been chosen as the athlete representative on LOCOG, and look forward to maintaining and building on the significant athlete involvement that played such an important role in bringing the Games to London.”

Jonathan was the unanimous choice of the selection panel put together by the British Athletes Commission (BAC), the independent voice of Great Britain’s elite athletes, which is responsible for ensuring their views are heard by the key decision makers within British sport.  Jonathan will work closely with the BAC between now and the London 2012 Games, canvassing the views of all athletes on issues affecting them, ensuring that the London Games is remembered by those taking part as the best Games ever and most athlete friendly.

The LOCOG board will be made up of representatives of key stakeholders such as the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, the Greater London Authority, the British Olympic Association, the British Paralympic Association, London 2012 and British IOC members.  An announcement on the composition of the board will be made in due course.
