With 129 riders from 26 countries taking part this week in the Wakeboard World Championships of the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (IWWF), the impressive list of wakeboard superstars will guarantee a fascinating battle for the titles of IWWF World Champion this weekend.

IWWF officials arrive at the Puerto Escobar World Championship site

At the lakeside Opening Ceremony in Puertos del Lago on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, teams from the following countries carried their flags to the large starting dock area: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, France, Great Britain, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Paraguay, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Switzerland, Sweden and USA.

Welcoming all on site, with the band of the Argentinian Navy playing the national anthem, was President Dr. Jorge Renosto, Federacion Argentina de Esqui y Wakeboard (FADEW). This will be Argentina’s first hosting of an IWWF World Titled event.

Rider Massi Piffaretti (ITA) to challenge for IWWF World Champion title

In the Open category, riders to watch closely this week will certainly include 24-year-old past World Champion and IWWF Athlete of the Year Massi Piffaretti. From Como in Italy, he is one of the most experienced on site. IWWF World Cup champion, Australia’s Cory Teunissen, is on a high with his recent medals in the Australia Open and Moomba Masters championships. At just 20 years of age, he is proving to be very difficult to beat. Upsetting the form is also certainly on the cards for Ireland’s David O’Caoimh and Israel’s Guy Firer. Europe Africa Wakeboard Champion O’Caoimh and IWWF World Cup challenger Firer, have been snapping at the heels of an IWWF World title for some time!

The ladies to watch closely include Dallas Friday (USA), Sanne Meijer (NED) and Alice Virag (ITA). All are seasoned IWWF World Cup competitors. Friday has won more titles than any on the start list over the years, including the IWWF World Cup. Virag is rarely off the podium and 20-year-old Meijer is on the verge of taking this world title. Other IWWF categories in these World Wakeboard Championships include U14, U18, Masters and Veterans.
