Ireland will host the 2002 Sport Ireland World Indoor Tug of War Championships at the Neptune Stadium in Cork on March 20th to 24th.

International Teams from 13 nations will travel to Cork to compete for the male and female World Championship titles, the most the prestigious titles awarded in the sport of Tug of War.

Teams from countries including Japan, Chinese Taipei, South Africa, and the US will bring with them 700 overseas visitors to Cork made up of competitors, officials and supporters for the World Championships, sponsored by Bord Fáilte. The Sport Ireland World Indoor Tug of War Championships begin on Thursday 20th March with the international club competitions for two days, before the World Championships take over for the weekend.

The provision of funds for this and other major high profile sports events throughout Ireland is in keeping with the objective of the International Sports Tourism Initiative, introduced by Dr James McDaid TD. Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation, in association with Bord Fáilte. The Initiative which has an annual of budget of €7.52 million brings to Ireland prestigious events with the capacity to highlight the merits of Ireland as a leading sports tourism destination.

Other exciting events being supported by the International Sports Tourism Initiative in 2002 include: the Sport Ireland World Cross Country Championships at Leopardstown next month, the Seve Trophy in Druids Glen in April, the FIA World Sportscar Championships at Mondello Park in August, and the American Express World Championships in Mount Juliet in September.
