The International Rugby Board (IRB) today responded to week-end media reports suggesting it has concerns over the way Wales, the host union, has managed the accounts for Rugby World Cup 1999. While the original deadline for the filing of financial reports was February 4, 2000 the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) asked for and was granted a one month extension. Comments IRB Chief Executive Officer Stephen Baines: ” The WRU supplied draft accounts on February 24. We are reviewing these with them in an orderly manner. Baines also pointed out ticket sales are primarily a matter for the five host unions – Wales with England, France, Ireland and Scotland – who retain all but 5% of funds from this source. “I want to make it clear our auditors have not, as reported, expressed alarm or concern about the accounts submitted by the Welsh Rugby Union,” Baines added.
