IRB Appoints New Head of Rugby Services
The International Rugby Board today announced that Mark Egan has been appointed Head of its new Rugby Services Department. A present member of the executive management team his previous roles at the IRB were as IRB Sevens Manager and acting Head of the Tournaments Department.
The appointment represents a further step in the modernisation process of the IRB as part of its new governance model, which includes an internal departmental restructure and the strengthening of the executive management to deliver more dynamic and responsive decision-making capabilities.
A graduate in Business Studies from Trinity College, Dublin and a post-graduate in Economics and Politics from Oxford University, Mark has a thorough knowledge of the organisation and its operational and development capabilities through his previous positions within the IRB. He has very successfully managed the expansion and development of the IRB Sevens series and has been an integral part of the change management processes presently being implemented within the IRB.
Prior to joining the IRB he worked for Kobe Steel from 1991-1997 in the New Business Division as a Special Projects Manager. From 1997-2002 he worked for the Irish Development Agency firstly in Tokyo and then in New York as a marketing executive in the financial services sector. In Tokyo he was also the country manager for Korea.
As a player he represented Ireland at Under-21 and Under-25 levels, the Barbarians, Connaught and was a winning Oxford University captain in 1990, the last of three varsity match appearances. He also captained Irish Students, Irish Exiles and West Japan where he played with distinction for the Kobe Steel club.
The position is a newly created one following the amalgamation of the Tournament and Development Departments as part of the new governance model. As Head of Rugby Services Mark’s key responsibilities include the delivery of new strategic investment initiatives across the IRB’s international membership, and the planning, management and running of all non-RWC tournaments, including age group World Championships, IRB Sevens, the Super Cup and prospective new tournaments that will be established as part of the IRB’s Strategic Plan.
