Elections were held for the International Surfing Association’s Executive Committee during the ISA’s Biennial General Meeting, this past May. This took place in conjunction with the Quiksilver ISA World Surfing Games 2002 in Durban, South Africa.
The ISA wishes to announce that Fernando Aguerre, has been re-elected as President for another two years. This will be his fifth consecutive term as president. He was first elected in 1994 during the World Surfing Games, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Alan Atkins from Australia and Robin de Kock from South Africa, were also re-elected as Vice-Presidents. This will be Alan Atkins’ fourth consecutive term as Vice-President and Robin de Kock’s third consecutive term.
The ISA welcomes two newly elected Vice-Presidents, Maile H. Aguerre from Hawaii and Ramón Gil Jiménez-Facio from Spain.
Maile H. Aguerre, previous ISA Director of Public Relations is the first woman to be elected to an Executive Committee position within the ISA. She will continue with Jacques Hele’s efforts as the liaison with the International Olympic Committee and other major sporting organizations. During the last Pan-American Surfing Games in Venezuela, in February of 2002 she was also elected Vice-President of the Pan-American Surfing Association (PASA). Ramón Moncho Gil Jiménez-Facio is the Founder and President of the Federación Española de Surf, an ISA member nation. He has also been a member of the COE (Spanish Olympic Committee) since 1999.
The ISA extends its appreciation and thanks to departing Vice-Presidents, Marcos Conde from Brazil and Jacques Hele from France, (who, during the BGM in Durban, was named ‘Distinguished Member Emeritus of the ISA’), for all their time and dedication to the sport of surfing. The ISA wishes them the very best in their future endeavors.
