IAAF Completes Evaluation of 2009 World Championships Candidates
Monte Carlo – After travelling to 3 cities in five days, the IAAF Evaluation Commission has completed its on-site visits to candidates for the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Athletics.
The Commission was led by IAAF Vice-President Dapeng Lou (CHN), consisted of Council Members Cesar Moreno Bravo (MEX) and Jamel Simohamed (ALG) , Alberto Juantorena Bravo (CUB) representing the IAAF Athletes’ Commission of which he is Chairman, as well as IAAF General Director Pierre Weiss, Competitions Director Sandro Giovannelli, Communications Director Nick Davies, Project Manager Rosie Pili as well as Hiroshi Mochizuki and Annette Engelhardt who represent IAAF Marketing Partner Dentsu and their agents AMS.
The delegation arrived in Berlin, the German capital on Monday November 8, left for Split, Croatia, the following day, and arrived at the final destination Valencia, Spain, very late on Thursday 11.
Leaving Valencia on Saturday, Dapeng said: ‘We have had an extremely busy, but enjoyable few days and each Bidding Committee prepared our itinerary and programme with great care. Our aim with this evaluation is to produce an objective, detailed report which will give the IAAF Council as much information as possible to help them to select the venue that they believe will organise the best possible edition of the 2009 IAAF World Championships, the most important competition in the IAAF calendar.’
The group has not been asked to draw up a ranking, but will summarise the capabilities of each contender in a number of areas, based on study of the bidding documents and the on-site visits. The final decision will be taken at approximately 18:00h local time (GMT + 2) on Saturday 4 December after presentations made to the IAAF Council in Helsinki.
Each visit included tours of stadia, training and warm up facilities, hotels and Congress facilities, a detailed evaluation of the bid documents, and a question and answer session with the bidding team. The Commission identified weak points in each city’s bid, and made suggestions in the aim of helping the bidders make the best possible impact with their final presentations.
‘Each city has paid great attention and importance to our visit,’ said Lou. ‘We were received by representatives of municipal, regional and state governments as well as representatives of sporting bodies and were provided with personal assurances of support and commitment. Just by entering the bidding process, these cities are helping to promote our sport, and we are grateful for that.’
