TVN, the Chilean public-service free-to-air broadcaster, registered impressive figures throughout this past weekend following the Men’s Tennis Medals matches in Athens.

On Saturday 21st, an estimated 4m viewers (or 28% TV market share) followed, during its 3hr 25min of play, Fernando González successful victory for the Men’s Singles Bronze medal match against USA’s Taylor Dent.

Just a couple of hours later González was on court again but this time for the Men’s Doubles Gold medal match playing alongside countryman Nicolás Massú and facing Germany’s Nicolas Kiefer and Rainer Schuettler. The almost
4 hours of play registered an average of 38% market share, an estimated 5.7m viewers.

Following Saturday’s successful results, the whole country sat on Sunday at midday Chilean time in front of the TV to watch Nicolás Massú’s Single’s Gold Medal match versus USA’s Mardy Fish. During the 4 hours of play, it registered an extraordinary average of 43% market share or 6.5m viewers with the Medal’s ceremony gathering over 9.4m viewers (63% market share).

As a consequence of their son’s successful results, Massú’s parents missed their flight to Miami as hundreds of fans gathered in front of their house celebrating the historic triumph.

The celebrations are not likely to decline any time soon as in just a month time, Massú and González will be again playing for their country. It will be during the Davis Cup World Group Play-Offs against Japan in Massú’s home city of Viña del Mar.

Meanwhile, Spain’s TVE registered over 1.88m viewers (22.4% market share) during the Women’s Doubles Gold medal match in which Virginia Ruano and Conchita Martínez lost in straight sets to China’s unexpected ultimate Gold
