Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, Hon. Minister for Youth & Sports for the Republic of Ghana, will be speaking on the ‘Sport and Government’ panel alongside Protais Mitali, Hon. Minister of Sport and Culture for the Republic of Rwanda, at the Soccerex African Forum in Durban, 1-2 October.
The session will see a selection of ministers discuss the important relationship between sport and government in Africa, focusing on a number of key issues including bidding for and funding major events, shifting the level of financial support from the government to the private sector, creating and expanding relationships with key international stakeholders and improving grass root schemes.
The Ghanaian Ministry of Youth and Sport, headed up by Hon. Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, implements its goals and objectives through four different agencies: National Sports Council, the National Youth Council, the National Sports College and the National Youth Employment Programme. As one of West Africa’s leading sporting nations, these agencies are tasked with the effective mobilisation, empowerment, education and training of the next generation of Ghanaian athletes by working with some of the industry’s leading companies in the areas of player development, academy formation, social development and player management.
The national game of football is an area where Ghana has excelled by consistently producing world class players who have gone on to dominate the world stage. The men’s national football team is currently ranked 2nd best in Africa in the official FIFA World Cup rankings and as well as producing world class players, Ghana has established itself as a destination for Africa’s biggest sporting event, the Africa Cup of Nations, hosting the tournament 4 times, most recently in 2008.
