Initial data on television viewing figures received by the EAA for the European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, on 7-13 August indicates high audiences for the event across the continent.

Live coverage shown by host broadcaster SVT on the final weekend of the Championships achieved an audience share of over 70% on both Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 August.

Coverage of the final day’s action on Sunday 13 August, when 11 European titles were decided, scored particularly high viewing figures.  The action was watched by 3.3 million viewers on ARD in Germany (23% audience share), 2.4 million viewers on BBC1 in the UK (22% audience share) and 2.5 million viewers on France 2 (27% audience share).

YLE in Finland achieved an audience share of over 60% for its coverage of the Championships on both 12 and 13 August, while over 20% of the television audience in the Czech Republic enjoyed the final weekend’s action.

In addition, 300,000 spectators enjoyed the European Athletics Championships live in the stadium over the seven days of the event.
