UEFA’s Executive Committee today confirmed after their meeting of 6 and 7 September that the Feijenoord stadium in Rotterdam, Stadium De Kuip, will be the venue for the 2001/02 UEFA Cup final.
Feijenoord stadium, with a capacity of 52,000, was most recently used as the venue for the European Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1997 and as the venue for the final of EURO 2000™, although you have to go back to the home and away leg final of 1974 between Feyenoord and Tottenham Hotspur FC for the last time it was used in an UEFA Cup final.
‘The Executive Committee were unanimous in their choice of Rotterdam as the venue for the UEFA Cup final and are sure that the preparations and event itself will be a great success,’ said UEFA President Lennart Johansson.
Also discussed by the UEFA Executive Committee was the affiliation request of the Kazakhstan FA who made a detailed presentation to the Executive Committee. A UEFA delegation will visit Kazakhstan at the end of September. With regards to the membership issue of Gibraltar, any decision has been postponed pending the amendment of the FIFA statutes regarding the membership of new associations, expected to come into force in 2003. The Spanish FA has already shown their willingness to support the Gibraltar FA in football development programmes.
The Executive Committee also reviewed the statement of objections document sent by the European Commission to UEFA in July. It was confirmed that UEFA is continuing to work on the answers to these objections, will submit them in due time and is confident that a solution can be reached with the European Commission.
Also agreed was a grant of CHF 500,000 to the Polish FA to use to help respond to the effects of the recent flooding in the country.
With regards to the European/South American Cup (Toyota Cup) the Executive Committee confirmed that the co-operation between UEFA and the South American Confederation, CONMEBOL, will continue and the negotiations underway are expected to produce an agreement for this year’s final before the end of September. In the meantime the game between FC Bayern München and Boca Juniors remains scheduled for 27 November 2001 in Tokyo. Discussions about the future format of the competition will take place in due course.
The Executive Committee also approved the creation of a joint venture company between the Portuguese FA and UEFA to handle all organisational matters related to EURO 2004™.
It was agreed to postpone the introduction of a Club Licensing system by one year, to the 2004/05 season. This is to make sure that the system is fully operational from the very beginning of its introduction.
