Eurosport’s “Commissioner of Football”, Eric Cantona, takes UEFA Euro 2016 by storm

Eurosport’s video of Eric Cantona singing “Will Grigg’s On Fire” reached one in ten of the UK population over the weekend, as the clip took the internet by storm across Europe.

It received 4.2M video views and reached 10.7M people on Facebook in the first 24 hours. This was the third appearance of Cantona, the self-appointed “Commissioner of Football” on Eurosport’s digital media platforms, with each video growing in popularity.

The Daily Telegraph called it “the best video you’ll see all year”. It was also retweeted by Will Grigg, who has shot to global fame as a result of the chant, which is sung to the “Freed from Desire” tune.

Peter Hutton, Eurosport CEO said: “We made a conscious decision to invest in short-form content that can sit on our digital platforms. The success of our work with both John McEnroe and Eric Cantona is proof that the strategy is paying off with the aid of some unique talent and high end production.”

Cantona’s “Commissioner of Football” was produced by Eurosport’s team Jean-Christophe Labrunye and Thomas Lepage, who recently collaborated with John McEnroe on his “Commission of Tennis” content around the French Open.
