A few days away from the Football World Cup, 31st May 2002, Eurodata TV Worldwide presents their yearly 2001 report ‘One Sport Year in the World’.

Football was found to be the most popular sport in 2001, not only in Western Europe and in South America – which is regularly the case; but also in Asia, the continent which is hosting most awaited and watched event : The World Cup.

Champions League 2001/2002 : Another year with a decline in audiences.

Meanwhile, for the first audience results for this competition, Eurodata TV offers you their annual analysis of the Champions League in Europe, (which last year began on the 15th May).

The honoured winners, the Spanish, had nearly 10 million television viewers for the victory evening of the Real Madrid.

As for the unhappy finalists, there were 12 433 800 Germans supporting the Bayer Leverkusen.

In France, the final, permitted TF1 to obtain audience ratings of 37.7%, whilst in Italy it obtained only 24.3%.

In the UK, despite the elimination of Manchester United from the semi-final, ITV obtained audience ratings of 33.7% for this final.

Alas, these good scores have not changed the fact that the average audiences of the Champions League have slowly eroded during the last five years.

The regular fall in audience ratings this year in both France and in Italy confirm that it is unlikely that any of the clubs from these two countries will reach the competition’s semi-finals. In Germany and Spain, thanks to the good results obtained by the national clubs, the reduction of audience levels is less spectacular.
