With only five World Grand Prix events left on the calendar before the qualifying deadline on April 30, the 1* Swedish Open in Borlange looks set to provide some tough matches for the Olympic hopefuls. The home nation will be pinning its Men’s Singles hopes on top seed Thomas Johansson, who helped his team qualify for the Thomas Cup Finals with some fine performances last week in Sofia. He’s up against Bulgarian number one Boris Kessov in his first match. Johansson’s Thomas Cup teammate Rasmus Wengberg is seeded third, preceded by Korea’s Shon Seung Mo. Japan’s Kanako Yonekura, runner-up in the recent Korea Open, is top seed and firm favourite to take the Women’s Singles title over second seeded Sujitra Ekmongkolpaisarn of Thailand. England’s Julie Mann is fourth seed behind her Uber Cup nemesis Marina Andrievskaya of Sweden. In Men’s Doubles, the home team takes the top spot once more, with Peter Axelsson and Par-Gunnar Jonsson seeded first over Australia’s Peter Blackburn and David Bamford. With partner Rhonda Cator, Blackburn is favourite in the Mixed event, followed by Frederik Bergstrom and Jenny Karlsson of Sweden. In Women’s Doubles, Japan’s Haruko Matsuda and Yoshiko Iwata are number one seeds, with Cator and partner Amanda Hardy of Australia seeded second.
