Singapore, 29 April 2009 – The Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) confirmed the 18 competition venues for the inaugural Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games at a site visit to Bishan Stadium today. The visit was led by Mr Teo Ser Luck, Senior Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Transport.
The 18 venues, where 26 sports competition will be held, were determined in consultation with the International Federations (IFs) and approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). These are facilities owned by the Singapore Sports Council and other government agencies as well as commercial entities.
“Singapore won the bid to host the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) because it has right-sized and excellent facilities and infrastructure; no new venues were purposely built for Singapore 2010. To meet competition requirements, we are upgrading the facilities with the support of venue owners,” said Mr Goh Kee Nguan, SYOGOC Chief Executive Officer.
Mr Goh added, “Creative use of space in the Nanyang Technological University also allows us to locate the training venues for 13 sports within or near the Youth
Olympic Village. We will continue to work closely with the venue owners to prepare the facilities for the competition during YOG.”
SYOGOC is now in the operational planning phase from October 2008 to September 2009 where it is translating the concept of Singapore 2010 into detailed plans. In this phase, SYOGOC is also defining its operations strategy and developing the venue operations plan. Venue planning is an essential step in the preparation for Singapore 2010, where various divisions overseeing different functional areas will come together to carry out integrated planning for each venue.
