Many issues were discussed during the three day session and the following decisions, which will have an immediate impact on the sport of curling in Canada, were reached:
Coaching Certification – A coach accompanying a team at a Canadian Curling Championship shall have a minimum of Level II coach certification for curling or be registered with the Coaching Association of Canada’s Canadian Mental Training Registry.
Hogline Device – The CCA has been working for some time with a group of graduates from the Engineering Department of the University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon) on the development of an electronic hogline detection device. Field tests will take place throughout this summer and fall. If the tests are conclusive, the device will be used for the 2002 Season of Champions events.
Grand Slam of Curling – The CCA has no immediate plans to initiate any meetings with the World Curling Players Association (WCPA) regarding the Grand Slam of curling. However, the CCA remains prepared to discuss any matters the WCPA might feel appropriate to bring forward.
Restructure of Events – Beginning in 2003, the CCA will initiate a new plan for host committees and provincial associations involved with hosting major CCA championships. That plan will position the CCA to be in control of all financial aspects of the Nokia Brier and The Scott Tournament of Hearts.
Residency Rule For Olympics – In recognition that the Canadian men’s and women’s championships qualify teams to participate in the Canadian Curling Trials, Rule 2 (2) under the Special Rules for the Canadian men’s and women’s curling championships will be changed to read: Competitors in the championships shall be citizens of Canada. This change makes the CCA and Canadian Olympic rules consistent relevant to eligibility.
2005 Canadian Curling Trials – The CCA will confer with various athletes over the next three months and bring back a recommendation to the CCA board with regard to the qualifying process and format to be utilized for the Canadian Curling Trials in 2005.
Sport Canada Carded Athlete Funding – The CCA will continue to access financial assistance for its National Team program athletes from Sport Canada over the next four year period, leading to the 2006 Olympic Games. For athletes to be eligible to receive carding, they must be part of a training program approved by the CCA, which includes participating in playoffs leading to the Nokia Brier and The Scott Tournament of Hearts. This is consistent with existing terms and conditions for carding and is for clarification only.
