The global popularity boom in the expansion of Cable Parks continues with the introduction of these facilities already at the Olympic Games lakes in both Beijing and Barcelona. The environment-friendly and cost effective systems are proving to be beneficial with their own legacy efforts. The opening ceremony of these eighth Cable Wakeboard World Championships takes place on Monday, August 11th. During the week, qualification rounds, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals in 10 different wakeboard (WB) and 4 different wake skate (WS) categories will be held. The world champions in the Open categories will be crowned on the last day of the event, Saturday August 16th. Eight riders will make it to the finals, consisting of 2 runs each. The highest scoring run based on technical performance and overall impression will count as the rider’s final score. The rider with the highest score will be crowned world champion.
The field boasts the world’s leading Open Men cable wakeboarders, including reigning world champion, recent Bank of Beijing World Cup winner and current second in the Cable Wakeboard World Council (CWWC) rankings, Frederic von Osten (GER), plus the 18-year-old CWWC leader Sam de Haan (NED) and 2014 European Champion Dominik Gührs (GER), who is currently third in the overall rankings. Top contenders Im San (KOR), Lior Sofer (ISR), Andre Botta (GER), Philipp Turba (AUT) and Laszlo Papp (HUN) are also expected to push hard for podium honours.
In the Open Women category, the favorites include reigning world champion and currently fourth in the world rankings, Sophie-Marie Reimers (GER), and the 2014 European Champion Julia Rick (GER). Other hot contenders will be the recent Bank of Beijing World Cup winner Maxine Sapulette (NED), Victoria Sosulina (RUS), and Erika Langman (CAN).
The IWWF Cable Wakeboard World Championships are held every two years. The Norwegian province of Telemark in the south-west of Oslo will host the event for the first time. Norsjø Ferieland provides a 5-tower Cable Park, 11.5m high and 550m long, built by Rixen and opened in 2004. The Norwegian organizers have recently redeveloped the park by introducing six new competition obstacles from Unit. These include a spectacular and challenging 30m long Silas Thurman pool stair set.
