WASHINGTON, DC/BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA — (April 25, 2000) – BT Broadcast Services and IMPSAT Fiber Networks, Inc. (‘IMPSAT’, NASDAQ:IMPT), today announced the signing of a contract for the provision of satellite and earth station services to expand communications throughout Latin America. BT Broadcast Services is a worldwide supplier of broadcast solutions with a seamless global digital network of satellites and fiber, and IMPSAT is a leading provider of data transmissions and private telecommunications network services in Latin America, with an increasing emphasis on broadband transmission.
Under the terms of the agreement, BT will provide IMPSAT with 27 MHz of high-powered C-band capacity from BT’s dedicated lease on the INTELSAT 805 satellite at 304.5¦ East. IMPSAT will utilize this capacity to provide satellite delivered services to its local, international and multinational customers throughout the Americas. The excellent coverage of the 805’s footprint enables the distribution of satellite services to very small aperture terminals using existing linear polarized antennas. This optimizes both the transmission connectivity and cost-effectiveness of the transmission, even from very remote regions.
‘Our contract with IMPSAT builds on BT’s commitment to grow services in the Latin American region,’ said Jon Romm, general manager, BT North America Broadcast Services. ‘In addition to providing satellite capacity to IMPSAT, we also have two Transportable Earth Stations (TES) in the region which offer DVB MPEG compression encoders and a full suite of broadcast services. IMPSAT has made extensive use of BT’s TES system to connect its customers worldwide via BT’s global network’.
‘We rely on BT’s global network to provide the highest transmission quality and maximum interconnectivity that we require for our clients — even from the most remote areas of Latin America’, said Ricardo Verdaguer, CEO, IMPSAT. ‘Our relationship with BT helps us to put together tailor-made solutions for our clients that will serve to complement our current broadband strategy, once our fiber network is fully deployed.’
