Broadcast rights a key topic at forthcoming Sports Law and Business seminar
Sports broadcast rights will once again come into focus at Management Forum Ltd.’s Sports Law and Business seminar at London’s Cavendish Hotel on 21 April.
With Sky and BT Sport reportedly having paid over £5bn for live Premier League TV rights for three seasons from 2016-17, Allana Smith, Senior Legal Advisor to Sky Sports will hold a timely discussion on the key commercial and legal issues involved in bidding for and acquiring major sports broadcast rights.
Smith will be looking at how to effectively strike a balance between broadcasters and rights holders when negotiating media rights, taking into account the changing preferences and habits of viewers, the development of digital/social media platforms and of online streaming via betting websites, and also legal considerations, in particular around ownership of rights and rights protection challenges.
Also at Sports Law and Business will be Manchester United’s Director of Legal & Business Affairs, Patrick Stewart, who is well placed to put forward a major rights holders’ perspective on strategies for exploiting commercial rights in the modern era. Stewart will focus on areas of particular significance to rights holders and their partners, including player image rights, partnership exclusivity, the increasing prominence of digital and social media rights and future proofing deals.
A further session at the seminar will look at dispute resolution in sport (presented by 4 New Square barrister Daniel Saoul), with reference to recent high profile disputes in football and rugby, whilst Angus Bujalski, Head of Legal for Rugby Football Union, will discuss all aspects of staging major sporting events, from the initial tender process and evaluation of host bids, through selecting venues, ticketing policies and selling commercial rights, to delivering the event itself, with a particular focus on the Rugby World Cup 2015.
Sports Law and Business will end with a drinks reception, giving attendees the opportunity to network.
