Belgian-based pro Roger Hammond made the most of a rare racing visit to the UK and won the Archer Grand Prix, Britain’s first international road race of the season. Hammond had a fine tenth in the classic Gent Wevelgem race midweek and was in no mood to lose on home roads. With several wins to his credit on the continent this year, Hammond’s move to Collstrop has been a highly successful and, not surprisingly, it was the powerful and well-drilled Collstrop team who dominated the race. Hammond’s team-mate, Eric DeClerq, made much of the running, reflecting his own excellent form, following his heroic break in the recent Tour of Flanders. The Irish team also worked very hard over the eleven-mile circuit which, although dry throughout, was surprisingly windy. With a high pace maintained from the off, the lack of a big hill did not prevent steady attrition as riders dropped off the back of the main bunch. Hammond kept in touch with action at the front throughout the race and eventually broke clear with Irishman David McCann. However, McCann was powerless when Hammond attacked again coming into the finish and the Collstop star was able to enjoy his victory as he crossed the line six seconds clear. The race was the fifth round of the season-long Premier Calendar Series and, in the absence of series leader, Chris Newton, Andy Lyons was able to leap-frog to the head of the standings with another consistent ride into fifth place. Never higher than fifth, Lyons has nonetheless scored in every round of the series to date, in stark contrast to Newton, who has two wins but no other finishes to his credit. The fact that the Archer GP was won by a continental based rider underlines the importance of attracting international teams into British Racing, both in terms of attracting sponsors and raising the standard of racing. The Archer GP is the first of five Premier Calendar races which have international status this year as part of a programme initiated by the British Cycling Federation in 1999. The hard work is put into these races by the organisers is much appreciated by all involved.
