Berlin to Host 2005 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Oct. 18, 2003 – The City of Berlin will host the 2005 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship, it was announced by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) here in Brazil on Saturday.
‘Berlin has already established itself as the Beach Volleyball capital of Germany and has a wonderful track record of staging excellent FIVB events, ‘said FIVB President Dr. Rubén Acosta. ‘We know that bringing the Beach Volleyball World Championships into the very heart of one of the most famous cities in Europe will be a huge boost to the already booming sport. By ‘bringing Beach to the city’, we will continue to illustrate the growing maturity of Beach Volleyball.’
The President added that the 2005 World Championships in Berlin will be the perfect ‘encore’ to the 2004 Athens Olympic Games Beach Volleyball tournament.
The German Volleyball Federation has an admirable record of staging FIVB Beach Volleyball Open events and held their inaugural and highly successful Grand Slam in 2003.
German Volleyball Federation President, Mr. Werner von Moltke said by hosting the Beach Volleyball World Championships in the German capital in 2005, his organization were making a pledge to continue to promote top quality Volleyball competitions.
The German Volleyball Federation hosted the successful FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship in 2002 and followed this up with the Men’s European Championship in 2003.
Berlin’s Senator for Education, Youth and Sport, Mr. Klaus Böger, here visiting the 2003 edition, confirmed that the Berlin City authorities were looking forward to hosting an event that would be the perfect stage to showcase German Beach Volleyball players, now among the world’s best. The Championships would also be an excellent opportunity to present Berlin as one of the most exciting cities in Europe, Senator Böger said.
Á special ceremony to hand the championship banner from the City of Rio de Janeiro to the City of Berlin has taken place on center court between the men’s semifinal matches on Saturday.
Berlin was originally a candidate for the 2007 Beach Volleyball World Championships, but with the explosion of interest ‘Beach’ in Germany and surrounding countries is was a wonderful opportunity to present the sport’s best players to fans and followers, President Acosta said.
‘By bringing the World Championships to Berlin, we are making a solid investment in the future;’ said President Acosta. ‘Our players are perfect role models for the next generation and we know that such a top competition will be a great inspiration to our future stars.’
