BAA Millennium Youth Games Grand Final
Members of the Haribo London Towers Basketball team, the nation’s premiere basketball club, today helped celebrate 50 days to the start of the BAA Millennium Youth Games (BAA MYG) Grand Final. The Grand Final is the biggest sporting event of its kind, and takes place in Southampton between 17-20 August. Players Clive Lindo and Frank Batimba joined students from Hayes School, Bromley on the basketball court to help them prepare for the Grand Final.
Clive Lindo, Point Guard for the Haribo London Towers, said, ‘The BAA Millennium Youth Games offers a great opportunity for youngsters to compete at a grass roots level. The BAA MYG Grand Final will create a tight harmony between the regions in the UK. The Grand Final will be very competitive which is just what sport in this country needs.’
With only 50 days to go, preparations for the Grand Final are well under way:
– 31 Area Youth Games have already taken place with 12 more to be played throughout the UK. Finalists competing in the eight different sports of Hockey, Rugby, Basketball, Football, Netball, Tennis, Swimming, and Athletics are vying for places in the Grand Final.
– 350 volunteers from late teens to people in their 70’s have been recruited so far to work over the four-day period.
– 23 different training courses are up and running including ‘working with children’, ‘leadership and delegation’ and ‘motivation and teambuilding’.
– The new athletics track in Southampton Outdoor Centre is near to completion and local young athletes will be testing it out in July.
50 DAYS TO GO AND COUNTING…………
– 1200 gymnasts, dancers and performers are being auditioned for the opening and closing ceremonies. Rehearsals start 20 July.
– 16,000 BAA MYG t-shirts are in the process of being made, whilst over 500 medals are being crafted.
